From 2013 to 2016, he was the editor-in-chief at StickyMinds, the premier software test and quality website. He also found success as a contributing editor at STPCollaborative between 2008 and 2013, sharing his insights on software testing and development. From 2008 to 2011 Matt was a member of the technical staff at Socialtext, working on collaborative web documents and spreadsheets before Google Docs and Sheets existed as products.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Heusser was a project manager and software developer at Priority Health from 2003 to 2008. Recruited from a division of McGraw-Hill which is now 2020 Spaces, he garnered expertise as a software developer between 2000 and 2003. Mr. Heusser’s career began with positions as a programmer going back to 1997.
Mr. Heusser’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with a concentration in computer science from Salisbury University and a Master of Science in computer information systems from Grand Valley State University. He is a life member Association for Software Testing, having served twice on its board of directors. He was also an instructor in Information Technology at Calvin College from 2008 to 2010.
In 1998, at the age of 22 Mr. Heusser purchased Stegeman House, or “Twin Pines”, an Italian villa style home built in 1871. He spent his adult life in Allegan, restoring Twin Pines, raising his daughters Kathleen, Rachel, and now Juliana. During that time, he served as an officer in the Allegan Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE), a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, Soccer coach and religious education instructor at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Matthew is currently a noon hour supervisor and substitute teacher at Allegan Public Schools. Beyond civic and community engagement, Mr. Heusser also provides support to parents struggling to parent or reconnect in situations of high conflict.
A prolific author and editor, Mr. Heusser also served as the lead editor for “How to Reduce the Cost of Software Testing” (Auerbach) in 2011 and the lead author of “Software Testing Strategies: A testing guide for the 2020s” (Packt Publishing) in 2023.
In light of his success, Mr. Heusser was named the Most Influential Agile Test Professional by Agile Testing Days in 2014 and the Most Popular Online Contributor by The Agile Awards in 2015. He attributes much of his success to the values instilled by his father, Roger Heusser, a federal executive in the senior executive service, who emphasized hard work and perseverance.
Mr. Heusser continues to make investments in his local community, including real estate, property management, and even starting a residential and multi-family cleaning division for Excelon with his business partner, Michael Pettee.
