Additionally, he leads the design of the eCornell data model, which serves as the strategic foundation for both BI and AI initiatives across the institution.
In addition to his work at Cornell University, Dr. Guillemin Laborne co-founded GIAN in 2018 and continues to serve as its chief technical officer. The GIAN Health Cart Solution is an innovative nutrition scoring application that delivers personalized recommendations based on individual health conditions. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Guillemin Laborne’s work in this endeavor and others continues to have a lasting impact and is widely recognized for its innovation, technical excellence and real-world value.
From 2010 to 2018, Dr. Guillemin Laborne was the chief information officer and chief data architect at iVedix. One of the most memorable milestones in his career occurred in 2016 when the company won a competitive call for tender to provide the business intelligence platform selected by the United Nations for the implementation of the HIV Situation Room. Dr. Guillemin Laborne conceived and led the development of this platform, called miVedix. As part of the final selection process, he and his team were invited to the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, for a week-long evaluation, an experience that remains a highlight of his professional journey. In addition to being selected by the UN, miVedix has been successfully adopted by other prominent organizations, including Fresenius Medical Care and the Saudi Telecom Company.
Dr. Guillemin Laborne’s 19-year tenure at Eastman Kodak Company also marked significant achievements in his career. He joined the company in 1991 as a worldwide project technical leader, remained in this role until transitioning to chief data architect in 2008 and served in the latter capacity until 2010. At Eastman Kodak, Dr. Guillemin Laborne played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s data management capabilities by initiating foundational data quality processes and developing Medias, the company’s first data warehouse. He was also the architect and lead developer of the Sensitometric Data Integrator System (SDIS), created as part of Kodak’s strategic Worldwide Spectrum Initiative. These contributions earned him Eastman Kodak’s Best Worldwide IT Project Award for two consecutive years.
Dr. Guillemin Laborne’s academic journey includes a Diplôme d’Ingénieur, ENIB from École Nationale d’Ingénieurs de Belfort, which he obtained in 1985. He furthered his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science and informatics from the University of Franche-Comté in 1990. Dr. Guillemin Laborne has complemented his formal education with a certificate in generative AI for productivity, granted by Cornell University in 2025. With the rapid advancement of AI, he has seized the opportunity to expand his domain of expertise by focusing on one of the most critical success factors in AI: engineering high-quality datasets to effectively train and power intelligent systems.
Among Dr. Guillemin Laborne’s most distinguished achievements is the creation of the Papyrus enterprise software at Framatome in France during the late 1980s, a solution that remains in use to this day. While developing Papyrus he was simultaneously working on his Ph.D. thesis under the supervision of Professor Jean-Jacques Chabrier. This period offered him a unique opportunity to engage deeply with the forefront of software engineering practices, and he had early exposure to technologies such as HTML and the initial versions of the IP protocol, which were being used by academic institutions to share scholarly work across the globe.
One of the core challenges Dr. Guillemin Laborne faced while designing Papyrus was the concept of the “page”—not just as a printed document, but as a digital entity that could be rendered consistently across different computer screens. This led him to contemplate how such a concept could be formally standardized for both print and digital display. Although the answer was not yet clear at the time, the emergence of the Internet in the early 1990s would soon bring that vision to life on a global scale.
Dr. Guillemin Laborne attributes his success to a combination of being in the right place at the right time and recognizing the role that luck and serendipity can play in one’s journey. He considers himself fortunate to have crossed paths with influential mentors, including Professor Jean-Jacques Chabrier, whose support was instrumental in helping him earn his Ph.D. A pivotal moment in his career came with his recruitment by Kodak’s IT department, which not only accelerated his professional growth but also opened doors to opportunities in the United States and the global market.
