Since 2021, he has served as director of data operations and business analytics, as well as a software and data engineer at Trawick International. In this capacity, Mr. Mercer manages and develops application integrations and controls for multiple transaction processing and information systems. He is responsible for designing and implementing data models, visualizations and analytics for decision support and executive support systems. His expertise extends to creating and maintaining Power BI reports and dashboards for analytics and forecasting, optimizing backend technologies to automate business processes, administering relational database management systems to ensure optimal performance, and providing organizational support in system troubleshooting, usage, development and continuous improvement.
Additionally, Mr. Mercer serves as the lead data engineer at a telecommunications software firm. In this concurrent role, he oversees all aspects of data operations, including data collection, system integration and database architecture. His work encompasses managing medium-sized databases and designing and maintaining large-scale systems that process billions of records annually. Among his most notable accomplishments is the development of a fully functional reporting engine that he built independently. This sophisticated, cloud-based platform processes over 5 million records daily — approximately 1.8 billion per year — and is recognized for its operational efficiency, modularity, and seamless integration with surrounding technologies. This achievement exemplifies Mr. Mercer’s technical acumen and innovative problem-solving approach.
Before his current appointments, Mr. Mercer served as a technical instructor in Microsoft Office and earned value management systems at AIDT from 2017 to 2021. In this role, he provided instruction on advanced software applications and project management methodologies, equipping professionals with the skills necessary to excel in their respective fields.
From 2010 to 2021, Mr. Mercer was a business intelligence developer and analyst III at Austal Ships. He began his tenure at the company as a pipefitter apprentice before advancing into production control, where he managed planning, scheduling and earned value management for government contracts. His aptitude for working with complex engineering data led him to develop tools that automated data integration and reporting processes, supporting strategic decision-making across the organization. His contributions positioned him among the top 50 employees out of a workforce of 4,000.
Mr. Mercer is an active member of several esteemed industry organizations, including Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Eta Sigma, reflecting his commitment to professional excellence and continuous learning.
His academic journey began at an early age, when he entered college at 15. After initially pursuing restaurant management and later gaining hands-on construction experience to understand business operations better, Mr. Mercer discovered his passion for data-driven problem-solving at Austal Ships. Inspired by the film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” he returned to higher education to formalize his knowledge in finance and accounting. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Alabama Mitchell College of Business in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and finance.
Currently, Mr. Mercer is pursuing master’s degrees in applied statistics and business administration. These advanced studies are integral to his ongoing professional development, enabling him to deepen his expertise in data science, analytics and business strategy. He attributes his success to relentless drive, a refusal to stop learning or growing and a lifelong passion for knowledge that motivates him to push boundaries and pursue excellence.
Born in Dauphin Island, Mr. Mercer balances his professional pursuits with a rich personal life. He is the father of three children. Outside of work, he enjoys writing, fishing, and car racing.
Looking ahead, Mr. Mercer intends to complete his advanced degrees with high honors while obtaining project management professional and chartered financial analyst certifications. He plans to continue contributing to his current firms while expanding three companies he recently founded: a data integration and intelligence firm, a digital marketing company and an investment firm co-founded with a partner based in France. He also aims to publish his first book and establish an educational foundation dedicated to providing vocational and technical training for individuals in underserved communities. Through these endeavors, Mr. Mercer seeks to foster skills development and offer critical support services that empower participants to build stable, self-sufficient lives.
