Overath, December 2025 – More and more users of modern premium smartphones are reporting rapidly appearing scratches and abrasions on the backs of their devices. Models with painted or colored anodized aluminum surfaces seem to be particularly affected: Visible marks appear after just a short period of everyday use, impairing the high-quality appearance of the devices. CCM GmbH from Overath near Cologne offers a transparent, ultra-thin protective solution based on Liquid Glass.
Everyday use leads to visible damage
Modern smartphone designs are increasingly relying on lightweight, color-anodized or painted aluminum backs. These surfaces look elegant, but are often less resistant to abrasion and scratches. Even everyday situations – the device in a trouser pocket, contact with keys, coins or the metal edge of a handbag – can be enough to damage the thin layer of paint.
Consumers are increasingly reporting that even new devices or devices that are only a few days old are already showing micro-scratches or matt abrasions. This phenomenon is now being discussed on social networks under terms such as “Scratchgate”.
Why certain smartphone backs are particularly sensitive
Coloured anodized layers or thin coatings on aluminium housings only have a limited hardness due to their design. They can wear off more quickly on edges that are subject to heavy use – especially around the camera module. The darker the color, the more visible scratches become because the lighter metal underneath becomes visible.
This problem not only affects individual manufacturers, but also represents a challenge in terms of material technology for modern smartphone designs.
CCM offers a transparent protective solution based on liquid glass.
CCM GmbH has been developing ultra-thin liquid glass coatings for the protection of cell phones since 2014. These coatings make the backs of modern smartphones more resistant – without changing the design or grip of the device.
The protective layer, which is only around 100 nanometers thick, increases scratch and abrasion resistance, reduces the risk of visible micro-marks and also makes the surface easier to clean.
Bernd Zimmermann, Managing Director of CCM GmbH, explains:
“Many users are surprised at how quickly even premium devices develop visible scratches. This is exactly where our Liquid Glass coating comes in: it strengthens the surface without changing the appearance or making a cover necessary.”
Advantages of the Liquid Glass coating
– Increased scratch and abrasion resistance
– Invisible, ultra-thin layer (approx. 100 nm)
– Preservation of the original design – no cover or film required
– Additionally water, dirt and grease repellent
– Easy application, even for end users
