The Weekend Club (WKND CLUB) debuts today with a blunt thesis for the swipe-fatigued era: it’s never been about the app; it’s always been about who’s on it.
So WKND CLUB built two things that work together:
1. an AI-matched, offline social ritual-one weekend, one table, six seats, phones down-and
2. a five-level Blacklist-as-Design system that keeps those tables warm, safe, and worth your time.
“We don’t worship the app. We manage the room,” said Jennifer Wang, founder & CEO. “Great weekends come from great people. Our AI seats the table-and our blacklist design keeps the wrong behaviors from ruining it.”
What the app actually does
– Plans your weekend: share your available windows; the system seats a table of six at vetted venues across Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Vienna, and Los Angeles.
– Cuts the awkwardness: small-group, phone-down format with optional icebreakers; no endless DMs.
– Learns lightly: a sub-minute post-brunch check-in helps improve future seating-no homework.
By 2025 the company has curated 10,000+ brunch tables using this model.
**Blacklist-as-Design: Because it’s about who’s there**
Starting this week, WKND CLUB’s system automatically flags “high-risk users” and assigns them to a five-tier blacklist (L1-L5).
The higher the level, the higher the price uplift the user will see and pay to register.
Levels are determined only by these signals:
– Unverified face: users who have not completed front-face verification.
– Your low rating: users you rated 1-2.
– No-show history: users who registered but did not attend.
– Negative feedback: users who have received negative reviews from other participants.
Why this matters: it creates a positive loop-better behavior → better rooms → better weekends-by reducing the negative experiences caused by unsuitable users before anyone sits down.
“Blacklist isn’t a slogan; it’s a filter on who gets to shape your Saturday,” Wang added. “Show up, be decent, verify your face, respect others-and the room stays good for everyone.”
Not another dating app-by design
– Offline-first: the “product” is the table, not a chat thread.
– Six beats 1:1: more surface area for real opportunities-friends, collaborators, leads, sometimes romance-without date pressure.
– Safety is architectural: who sits where, and who earns the right to be there, is decided before the weekend.
