EMS is a new artist with both Brazilian and Italian nationality. He is the son of Ameila Baroni and José Matos dos Santos, and was born in Limeira, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, about 150 kilometers from the state capital.
Since childhood, EMS has found comfort in writing poems and songs, a passion that stayed with him through the years. As a young man, after the tragic loss of his girlfriend in a car accident, music became his way of coping with grief. It was during this painful time that he wrote “Under Your Gaze,” one of the most personal songs on his debut album.
After going through this difficult period, EMS decided to move to Milan, Italy – as a way to try to heal, distance himself from painful memories, and stop taking his prescription medication. Milan is about 239 kilometers from Ostiglia, a small town on the banks of the Po River, near Verona – where his great-grandparents were born and raised. Before moving to Brazil, they had four daughters, and it was in Brazil that EMS’s grandfather and great-aunt were later born.
EMS spent some time in Milan before moving to London, UK, where he has been living for the past fourteen years. Even after all these changes, he never let go of his love for writing. He continued filling his old notebooks with poems and lyrics, which he kept with great care and affection. Now, he has decided to bring these writings to life in his debut album, “Ecliptic,” which features thirteen tracks, including “Under Your Gaze.”
This song recently reached the semifinals of the International Songwriting Competition (ISC), one of the most respected songwriting contests in the world. It stood out in a very competitive field, where only about 15% of all entries make it to this stage.
“Under Your Gaze” is a song that feels like both a murmur and a cry. It speaks of that deep and complex feeling of being caught in someone’s gaze – a presence that can hurt but also soothe.
The lyrics are filled with powerful imagery: invisible webs, shadows that follow each step, and chains that, instead of suffocating, become the only light in the darkness.
The instrumental is deep and ethereal, creating the feeling of floating in an empty space, as if caught in a dream. The sounds echo like a slow heartbeat, searching for meaning in a sea of emotions.
“Under Your Gaze” is for anyone who has loved so deeply that they felt trapped – for anyone who knows the weight of a gaze that never lets go. It’s a song that, while heavy, is beautiful because it speaks to real and honest feelings. Sometimes, we need songs like this – songs that understand us when we can’t even understand ourselves.
