In addition to his role as the chief executive officer, Mr. Oats has also served as a board member at smartShift since 2021, contributing to the company’s strategic direction and governance. Prior to these positions, he held the title of Executive Vice President and General Manager of Business Transformation at smartShift from 2020 to 2021, where he was responsible for leading large-scale change initiatives and optimizing business processes.
Before joining smartShift, Mr. Oats was the Chief Executive Officer of the Americas region at SNP from 2019 to 2020. In this capacity, he managed regional operations and spearheaded growth strategies across diverse markets. From 2015 to 2019, he was a Global Vice President of Database and Data Management at SAP, where he played a pivotal role in shaping product strategy and expanding market presence worldwide. Mr. Oats was directly recruited into SAP by Hasso Plattner who co-founded SAP back in 1972. Dr. Plattner was the Chairman of the Supervisory Board at SAP when he brought Mr. Oats in after meeting him online through one of Dr. Plattner’s business and technology blogs.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Oats served as SAP HANA Business Transformation Leader at Tata Consultancy Services from 2014 to 2015, focusing on enterprise-level digital transformation projects. He was an Associate Partner for SAP HANA and Analytics at IBM from 2013 to 2014, providing advisory services on advanced analytics solutions. Mr. Oats authored the first SAP HANA Point of View for IBM Global Business Services in 2013.
From 2012 to 2013, Mr. Oats contributed to Oracle as a Solution Specialist for SAP on Oracle Business Development in North America. He previously held the position of Advanced Customer Services SAP Sales Director for North America at Oracle from 2009 to 2012. His earlier roles include serving as SAP Practice Lead at Signature Consultants from 2006 to 2009; CRM sales consultant at CDC Software between 2004 and 2006; Territory Sales Manager at Verso Technologies from 2002 to 2004; and Customer Care Leader at Akamai Technologies in 2001.
Mr. Oats attributes much of his success to a relentless commitment to teamwork, radical transparency, and to the many individuals who have supported him throughout his professional journey.
