Unchained Music Bans Suno and Mureka Content; Pledges No AI Training on Artist Catalog
Music distributor releases comprehensive AI policy protecting artists’ rights to control how their music is used and monetized

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 08, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Unchained Music, the artist-first music distributor and services company, today released a comprehensive policy on artificial intelligence that draws a clear line in the sand for the music industry. The catalog its artists and labels entrust to it will not be used to train generative AI models, and content produced by AI music platforms operating without full licensing across the major and independent rights-holder community, including Suno and Mureka, will be rejected at the door.
The policy, built on four pillars and enforced through the company’s existing Content Policy, sets a new standard for how distributors can protect human creators as a flood of AI-generated tracks crowds streaming services and threatens to dilute royalty pools for working musicians.
“Music is, and always has been, a fundamentally human act,” said Matthew Busch, COO of Unchained Music. “Our artists’ work is not a dataset. We will not allow it to be scraped, mined, or used to train models that compete with the very people who made it. And we will not pad our catalog with low effort generated content that displaces real creators from royalty pools and listener attention.”
What the Policy Does
Unchained Music’s AI policy rests on four commitments:
1. Champion human creativity. All submissions must demonstrate genuine human creative input, whether through editing, arrangement, production, or other artistic contribution. Tracks created substantially or entirely by AI without meaningful human involvement are rejected without exception, as are mass-produced generic content, royalty-farming releases, and SEO-driven submissions designed to crowd out real artists.
2. Support AI as a tool, not a replacement. The company encourages artists to use AI for ideation, sound design, and workflow enhancement when a human creator remains at the center of the process. Unchained Music is a proud supporter of the Principles for Music Creation with AI, the AI4Music initiative founded by Roland and Universal Music Group, joining more than 100 music technology companies, academic institutions, and distribution partners who have endorsed the principles.
3. No AI training on distributed music. Unchained Music does not grant, and will not grant, rights for any third party to use music distributed through its platform to train, develop, or improve generative AI models without the explicit, informed consent of the individual rights holders. The company rejects the notion that broad terms-of-service language should serve as a backdoor to exploit creators’ work.
4. Hold AI tools to an ethical standard. AI-assisted submissions must be created using tools built on transparent, ethically sourced datasets. The company directs artists to Fairly Trained’s certified models, a nonprofit certification founded by Ed Newton-Rex that independently verifies AI platforms have not used copyrighted work without a license. The company also rejects content created with platforms facing active copyright claims, including Suno and Mureka.
“We believe artists deserve to know whether the tools they use were built on explicit and enthusiastic consent,” Busch added. “Supporting innovation and protecting creators are not in tension. They are the same job. Our role as a distributor is to make sure the people who make music can control it, monetize it, and trust where it ends up.”
Enforcement and Compliance
Unchained Music’s industry-leading review process actively enforces the new standards. The Content Policy requires proof of rights and licensing documentation for AI-generated content, mandates metadata attribution for AI tools used in production, and rejects releases from unverified AI sources. Users who repeatedly violate the policy face suspension or removal from the platform.
