His expertise in IT automation, cloud systems and banking application development has enabled him to streamline processes for customers, making them more efficient and dependable. Dr. Jha’s collaboration with the model team at IBM has brought valuable artificial intelligence insights to enhance model improvements across the organization.
Dr. Jha’s tenure at IBM began in 2021 as a research staff member, where he quickly distinguished himself through his deep technical skills and unique ability to bridge artificial intelligence with complex system architectures. He was promoted to staff research scientist in 2023 before assuming his current senior role in 2024. Throughout his time at IBM, Dr. Jha has led the deployment of technologies at scale, with his first large-scale project holding particular significance as a milestone in his career.
Prior to joining IBM full-time, Dr. Jha gained extensive experience as a graduate research assistant at the University of Illinois Coordinated Science Laboratory from 2014 to 2022. During this period, he contributed to groundbreaking research on the safety and resilience of autonomous vehicles and cloud systems, work that attracted industry attention from both NVIDIA and IBM. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Jha collaborated with NVIDIA to identify scenarios in which self-driving cars are most prone to accidents. He and his team developed an automated method to uncover these failure modes, work that received widespread media attention and significantly influenced NVIDIA’s autonomous vehicle software business.
Dr. Jha’s early career comprised a range of formative academic and industry experiences. He served as a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2018 and 2020, including for a course on the dependability of AI systems. He completed research internships at NVIDIA in 2018 and 2020 and an internship with IBM Cloud in 2019, along with summer internships at Microsoft in 2015 and 2016.
Earlier, Dr. Jha collaborated on research at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2014 and served as a teaching assistant for artificial intelligence and multi-core system programming at Vellore Institute of Technology in 2013. Additionally, he participated in the Microsoft Winter School on Theoretical Computer Science at Microsoft Research in 2012 and worked as a research intern at NeST Technologies in 2012.

A respected member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute, Dr. Jha has also taken on leadership roles as chair member at top academic conferences, including serving as program committee co-chair for DSN in 2024, ISSRE in 2023 and DSML in 2022. Moreover, he has contributed to technical program committees for IEEE/ACM conferences and previously served as president of VIT GLUG from 2011 to 2012.
Dr. Jha’s academic background is distinguished by degrees from leading institutions: he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2021, following a Master of Science in computer science from the same university in 2016. Earlier, he received a Bachelor of Technology in computer science from Vellore Institute of Technology in India in 2014.
Dr. Jha’s path into research was shaped by an influential experience as an international exchange student at Nanyang Technological University during his undergraduate studies, where he worked under Professor Bingsheng He, now Professor and vice-Dean (Research) at School of Computing of the National University of Singapore, who inspired him to pursue advanced research. This collaboration led to publication in a prestigious database conference, opening doors to top U.S. graduate programs.

He was also named an IBM PhD Fellow in 2020.
