His career spans several decades, marked by significant contributions to the tech industry. His professional journey began at DoubleClick Inc., where he started in 1997 and served as director of product development until 2001. In the following four years, he advanced to director of European operations at DoubleClick, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the company’s reach across Europe.
In 2004, Mr. Bender was appointed vice president of product management at DoubleClick Inc., a position he held until 2008. His leadership was instrumental in supporting the acquisition of the company by Google, a milestone that significantly impacted the digital advertising landscape. Following this acquisition, Mr. Bender transitioned to Google, where he served as director of product management from 2008 to 2015. During his tenure, he founded the Google Display Network, transforming it into a multi-billion dollar business.
He was then promoted to vice president and from 2015 to 2019, Mr. Bender held the role of vice president of display and video ads at Google. He then served as vice president of news and search ecosystems at Google, where he led efforts to enhance Google News and search functionalities until 2022. His work focused on the intersection of technology and information dissemination as well as supporting the publisher ecosystem.
Since leaving Google in late 2022, Mr. Bender has dedicated himself to advisory roles, early-stage investments and board memberships. He advises multiple companies and individuals on early-stage product strategies while also serving on various boards. Notably, he joined the board of directors at Entravision in 2023. His product and technical background is instrumental in guiding these organizations to amplify their positive social impact.
Most recently, Mr. Bender joined AI-Media’s board as a non-executive director. AI-Media is headquartered in Australia and they are an ASX-listed company that focuses on technological solutions that support audio-impaired individuals. He is one of the first board members to possess a technical background and plans to orient the company’s focus toward technology and technological services. Just one of their technology services delivers seven million units of captioning, transcription and translation for live and recorded video content.
Mr. Bender’s academic journey began at Hunter College High School in Manhattan, a specialized high school he commuted to daily from Brooklyn. He later earned a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in 1995. In addition to his education, he attributes his achievements to his curiosity and strong work ethic, qualities that continue to drive him to learn and volunteer his expertise.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Bender is actively involved in civic organizations and creative projects. He has served as board member of the Classical Theatre of Harlem since 2013 and currently serves as their Treasurer, where he plays a crucial role in managing their finances, supporting their creative work and youth outreach in the community. Additionally, he previously served on the boards of IAB and Dstillery.
In recognition of his many career achievements, he was recognized as being a Crain’s New York 40 under 40 leader by Crain’s New York in 2012. Mr. Bender is also proud to hold several patents, including one for controlling content distribution and another for a system for sharing anonymous user information.
