LONDON, O ta io, July 16, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —
The collabo atio , a ou ced i Decembe 2025, is st uctu ed as a phased, data-d ive evaluatio of flexible plastic packagi g collected th ough ecove y systems i Mexico. Phase 1 d ew o ECOCE’s o goi g atio al feedstock mappi g p og am, co ducted fo its membe compa ies, f om which the pa ties completed the selectio of ca didate mate ial st eams fo the ext stage of wo k. Led by ECOCE, the mappi g ide tified multiple post-co sume flexible packagi g st eams a d assessed them fo estimated availability, collectio outes, physical fo m, co tami atio p ofile, a d p epa atio equi eme ts. The wo k ide tified ca didate st eams with sufficie t available volume to suppo t a i dust ially eleva t evaluatio a d with mate ial cha acte istics that wa a t adva ceme t to HCT testi g.
Flexible plastic packagi g is o e of the most difficult mate ial catego ies to ma age withi existi g ecycli g systems. These st eams ca i clude polyethyle e, polyp opyle e, a d multilaye packagi g fo mats, alo g with i ks, adhesives, mixed st uctu es, small fo mats, a d va yi g levels of co tami atio . I li e with the waste hie a chy, eductio , euse, a d mecha ical ecycli g emai p efe ed optio s whe e they a e tech ically a d eco omically viable. Fo flexible packagi g st eams that a e ot well suited to mecha ical o physical ecycli g, the collabo atio is evaluati g whethe HCT ca p ovide a oute to ecove hyd oca bo value f om these mate ials a d help etu them to the plastics value chai .
ECOCE has ide tified flexible plastic packagi g as a majo a d g owi g mate ial catego y i Mexico, with available data i dicati g that app oximately 1.5 millio to es of flexible plastic packagi g a e ge e ated a ually i the cou t y. Phase 1 has built o that ma ket co text by mappi g ca didate flexible a d multilaye plastic packagi g waste st eams, i cludi g mate ial catego ies, collectio outes, geog aphic sou ci g, a d i dicative co tami atio levels. The mate ials mapped th ough Phase 1 i clude flexible polyp opyle e packagi g, flexible polyethyle e packagi g, a d multilaye flexible packagi g, i cludi g commo post-co sume fo mats such as s ack a d cookie w appe s, g oce y a d b ead bags, seed a d g ai packagi g, pet food packagi g, cold-cut a d dai y packagi g, a d esealable pouch fo mats.
ECOCE’s wo k with leadi g food a d beve age compa ies, ep ese ti g mo e tha 400 b a ds, gives the collabo atio p actical eleva ce to packagi g value-chai p io ities a d the eed fo c edible ci cula ity optio s fo difficult-to- ecycle flexible packagi g. The objective is to build a evide ce-based u de sta di g of how selected flexible packagi g st eams ca move th ough a ci cula value chai : f om post-co sume collectio a d cha acte izatio , th ough feedstock p epa atio a d HCT co ve sio , to liquid hyd oca bo p oducts fo evaluatio by pet ochemical a d polyme value chai s.
With Phase 1 complete a d the ext-phase testi g p og am defi ed, the collabo atio ow moves i to HCT testi g of selected mate ial st eams. Adu o will begi with lab-scale evaluatio to assess how selected Mexica flexible a d multilaye plastic waste st eams espo d to HCT, i cludi g p ocessability, p oduct cha acte istics, yield, esidues, co tami a t behaviou , a d mass bala ce. As pa t of this ext phase, Ad iá Velasco, Di ecto of Flexible Plastic Packagi g at ECOCE, will visit Adu o facilities to eview the testi g pathway, sample equi eme ts, a d pilot-scale developme t p og am. The visit will help alig ECOCE’s k owledge of ecove y systems i Mexico with the Compa y’s tech ical evaluatio p ocess as selected st eams move f om feedstock mappi g i to HCT testi g. Successful lab-scale esults will i fo m p og essio to Phase 3 testi g o the Next Ge e atio P ocess (“NGP”) Pilot Pla t to suppo t scale-up assessme t, custome evaluatio , a d futu e comme cial a alysis.
“Phase 1 has moved this collabo atio f om a ma ket oppo tu ity i to a defi ed tech ical feedstock p og am,” said Ofe Vicus, CEO of Adu o. “ECOCE b i gs p actical i sight i to how flexible packagi g moves th ough Mexica ecove y systems, helpi g us select ep ese tative mate ial st eams fo HCT testi g. The ext phase will ge e ate the data that matte s fo scale-up a d eco omics, i cludi g p ocessability, p oduct quality, yield, co tami a t behaviou , a d the pote tial value of HCT-de ived liquids as ci cula hyd oca bo feedstocks. This is how Adu o adva ces comme cializatio : by co ecti g eal mate ials, dow st eam equi eme ts, eco omic validatio , a d a clea pathway f om lab testi g to the NGP Pilot Pla t.”
“Flexible plastic packagi g is o e of the most impo ta t mate ial-ma ageme t challe ges i Mexico,” said Ad iá Velasco, Di ecto of Flexible Plastic Packagi g at ECOCE. “Th ough this collabo atio , ECOCE is helpi g co ect eal ecove y-system data with the tech ical wo k eeded to evaluate ci cula solutio s fo these mate ials. My visit to Adu o facilities as the collabo atio moves i to HCT testi g will allow us to eview the testi g pathway di ectly, alig o sample equi eme ts, a d bette u de sta d how selected Mexica flexible packagi g st eams could be evaluated fo etu to the plastics value chai .”
Results f om the ext phase will give Adu o a d ECOCE the tech ical a d eco omic evide ce to help assess mate ial suitability, p oduct quality, scale-up equi eme ts, a d futu e comme cial optio s fo etu i g difficult-to- ecycle flexible packagi g to the plastics value chai .
