NEWH New York Chapter Partners with Be Bunchful Foundation to Rebuild The Living Children’s Academy in The Gambia, Africa
Uniting to Rebuild a School and Transform Lives Through Education
New York, NY, Wednesday, March 7, 2025
With deep roots in community and a steadfast commitment to transforming lives, the New York Chapter of NEWH, led by 2024 President Erica Puccio, proudly joined a fundraising initiative launched by the Be Bunchful Foundation to support The Living Children’s Academy, a small school in a small Gambian village in Africa. This vital partnership will help create safe, conducive learning spaces for the children, and as we approach the end of Black History Month in the US and reflect on the broader tapestry of Black history, it compels us to envision a brighter future, even as we look toward the upcoming Women’s History Month. This is a call to action to nurture the next generation of leaders, especially young women, who have historically faced disparities, yet hold boundless potential.

For years, students at The Living Children’s Academy have endured challenging conditions, sitting on broken chairs, using outdated learning materials, and studying in classrooms without proper ceilings or flooring. These obstacles impede their potential and can prevent their aspirations from becoming a reality.
“Education is the cornerstone of every thriving community,” said Raquel Miller, Founder, Chair, and CEO of Bunchful, the social enterprise behind Be Bunchful Foundation. “Rebuilding The Living Children’s Academy is not simply about constructing a building; it’s about constructing futures, dreams, and hope. With NEWH standing beside us, we have the power to transform lives and inspire generations.”
Major Support and Heartfelt Gratitude:
Past students Binta Sawo and Aja Fatou Camara, both pursuing medical careers with dreams of becoming surgeons spoke on behalf of current beneficiaries of the school, extending heartfelt thanks to key benefactors: Erica Puccio, esteemed philanthropist Elisa Tjioe and Levar Jackson, founder and CEO of Yogh Group who stated:
“Our AlgoHelix technology is designed to provide sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the planet. By supporting The Living Children’s Academy, we’re investing in the future of these children and empowering the community with sustainable resources that promote health and economic growth.”
Their gratitude reflects how generous support not only opens doors to academic excellence but also fuels the aspirations of future leaders, including trailblazing women.
A Vision Rooted in Legacy and Empowerment:
This initiative is imbued with the rich cultural significance that defines both Black History and the upcoming Women’s History Month. Rebuilding The Living Children’s Academy honors the enduring legacy of those who have fought for equal opportunities and quality education. It also creates a brighter future for girls and young women, giving them the tools and environment needed to achieve their dreams, particularly medical fields.
Inspired by the enduring legacy of Ms. Coolie, the grandmother of Bunchful Foundation’s founder, Raquel Miller, the foundation nurtures a culture of giving that transcends borders. Ms. Coolie’s wisdom and compassion continue to serve as a beacon of hope, encouraging communities to come together in support of one another.
Fundraising Drive Details:
NEWH New York Chapter is honored to join the fundraising drive launched by the Be Bunchful Foundation. This initiative calls on members, partners, and the broader community to help transform the educational landscape for children in this small Gambian village. All funds raised go directly to The Living Children’s Academy through the GoFundMe campaign:
• Rebuild the school’s infrastructure to create safe and inspiring learning environments.
• Provide furniture, computers and other educational materials to elevate the quality of education.
• Empower teachers, staff and students with the resources they need to pursue their dreams.
Erica Puccio of NEWH New York Chapter, emphasized the significance of this initiative:
“Our industry thrives on hospitality and service, and through our partnership with the Be Bunchful
Foundation, we extend that spirit beyond borders. We are committed to nurturing environments that
empower the next generation, especially young women who aspire to excel in fields like medicine. We
invite everyone to join us in this deeply meaningful endeavor.”
