Operator-investor Felix Huettenbach known for scaling Sameday Health into one of the fastest-growing digital health platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic joins Terranum and Prieska Power Reserve to develop a 100 MW renewable-powered digital infrastructure hub targeting hyperscale demand by 2029.
Prieska, South Africa / Kapstadt, March 2026 – Felix Huettenbach, entrepreneur and operator-investor, has joined Victor Decalf and the Terranum team in a landmark site visit to Prieska, South Africa. Together with the team from Prieska Power Reserve, Huettenbach and Decalf met with the Mayor and senior government officials to discuss preliminary approval for what is envisioned to become Africa’s largest data center campus designed to be fully off-grid and powered entirely by renewable energy.
The project, developed jointly by Terranum and Prieska Power Reserve, targets an initial capacity of 100 MW with a phased expansion pathway to 500 MW, positioning South Africa as a global benchmark for sustainable, large-scale digital infrastructure.
A Rare Renewable Energy Profile
What distinguishes Prieska from other candidate sites is its exceptional and complementary natural energy profile. The region benefits from strong, consistent winds at night combined with abundant solar generation throughout the day – a near-continuous renewable power supply that significantly reduces reliance on battery storage, improving both system efficiency and long-term resilience.
“South Africa has the potential to become a global benchmark for sustainable, large-scale digital infrastructure, while delivering meaningful long-term economic and employment benefits to the region,” the Terranum team stated following the visit.
Felix Huettenbach: From COVID-Era Infrastructure to Global Data Centers
Felix Huettenbach brings a rare profile to Terranum’s leadership: he is not a financial investor who evaluates companies from the outside, but a builder who has constructed complex, high-throughput operational systems under real-world pressure. As co-founder and CEO of Sameday Health, Huettenbach scaled a digital-first healthcare platform from a single COVID testing operation into a national service spanning 50+ locations across the United States – processing over 40,000 bookings per day and serving more than 3 million customers at peak pandemic demand.
The infrastructure challenge Huettenbach solved at Sameday Health during the COVID-19 crisis rapidly deploying end-to-end digital and physical systems across multiple sites, under regulatory pressure and with zero margin for downtime mirrors precisely the complexity of building off-grid, large-scale data center infrastructure in an emerging market like South Africa. It is this operational DNA that Terranum brings to the Prieska project.
“Execution beats narrative,” Huettenbach has noted in his investment philosophy, a principle that translates directly into Terranum’s approach: site selection based on verifiable energy fundamentals, not speculative projections.
Advancing Discussions with Hyperscalers
The Prieska campus is designed to serve hyperscale demand from global technology companies including potential partners such as Meta, Microsoft, xAI, and Anthropic. Following encouraging preliminary approval from the Prieska municipal council, Terranum and Prieska Power Reserve are now actively advancing discussions with hyperscale partners. The initial 100 MW phase is targeted for delivery in 2029, with energy and connectivity infrastructure already in development.
The project is expected to create significant long-term employment opportunities in the Northern Cape region and contribute to South Africa’s ambition of becoming a leading digital infrastructure hub for the African continent.
