Celebrating Black History Month with the Award-Winning Sankofa Chicago Documentary on PBS
Chicago, IL – February 18, 2025 – Sankofa Chicago takes us to the birthplace of Black History Month to show how understanding Black history empowers communities to pursue justice, education and a lasting legacy. Through personal stories, it connects past lessons to present challenges. Now premiering on PBS stations nationwide and PBS Passport.
“Guided by the philosophy of Sankofa – an Akan word from Ghana meaning ‘to go back and fetch it’ – I am committed to uncovering our true history and exploring its transformative impact on identity and self-worth,” said filmmaker Vanessa Page Wright. “Sankofa teaches us that understanding our past is essential for shaping a meaningful future, and this principle drives my work as a mother, filmmaker and educator deeply rooted in Black heritage.”
The documentary features interviews with scholars, community leaders, and everyday individuals, addressing issues affecting the Black community and demonstrating how Sankofa can promote social justice, build community, and foster growth.
Awards & Availability
Winner of Best Educational Film at the Cannes World Film Festival, Sankofa Chicago has also received accolades from multiple film festivals nationwide. In addition to PBS, the documentary is also streaming on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and FuboTV and more making it accessible to audiences nationwide.

Vanessa Page Wright is an award-winning filmmaker and educator whose work explores race, culture, and ethnicity through storytelling. Her films have been featured in festivals worldwide and supported by organizations such as the Illinois Arts Council, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, and Columbia College Chicago.
