We can find joy by counting the blessing we have today and the blessings we are promised in the future.
“Count your blessings, name them one by one, count your blessings see what God has done.”
You’ve probably heard this phrase or sung this song at some point in time, but when you hear the words, or sing them, do you truly take them to heart?
The world can be chaotic, and our lives can move at paces that limit our ability to focus on what we have to be thankful for. We all long for peace, harmony, health, and stability. Our longing comes from how we were created, and God promises that one day the world will be put right; but he also promises joy for today.
And His promises will not go unfulfilled.
We can find joy by counting the blessing we have today and the blessings we are promised in the future. As we pause to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, let us take a moment to count our blessings.
One of my favorite future blessings is our eternity with Christ. Revelation 21 gives us a glimpse of what eternity holds for Christians.
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (2-4)
For Christians, our future is just as bright as the golden glow of the Celestial City. It’s just as refreshing as the Crystal River. It’s just as exciting as an angelic concert, and just as fulfilling as answered prayer. God has blessed us with the assurance of a precious future, so let’s be forward-thinking optimists. Let’s get excited about what’s ahead and about Who’s in charge.
On this Thanksgiving Day, thank the Lord for the joy and beauty that await us in heaven. Thank Him for the blessing of knowing that we will spend eternity with Him. This focus on the blessings we have and those that lie ahead can transform our lives today.
For the believer, the sheer act of counting our blessings not only grants us peace but also instills a profound sense of gratitude. What an awe-inspiring gift!
Join me in this prayer of gratitude on this day set aside specifically to give thanks.
PRAYER OF GRATITUDE
“Father, all I have comes from You. I know joy because of Your love. I know grace because of Your forgiveness. I know peace because of Your promises. I know hope because of Your imminent return. Thank you for the daily blessings and for the blessing of eternity with You. Thank you for the grace you have bestowed upon us and the beauty and glory of the eternity you have in store for you children. May the knowledge of what lies ahead bring joy to our lives each and every day. Help me to remember, amid conflicts great and small, to count my blessings and know that you are God over all. I stand in awe of Your blessings, firmly grounded in gratitude for the ways You care for me. I love You. Thank You!”
AMEN
Happy Thanksgiving!
