3D stereo visualization enhances Hexagon ImageStation® photogrammetry workflow. (© Schneider Digital)
With the sophisticated and flexible ImageStation® photogrammetry environment from the Swedish measurement technology and software company HEXAGON, particularly large volumes of aerial image, UAS and satellite data can be efficiently processed, managed and used for geodata acquisition. A central task that is solved extremely efficiently with ImageStation® is the precise, interactive capture of 3D objects and infrastructure – such as buildings, roads, bridges and natural terrain features.
In Germany, topographic surveying and updating of infrastructure is the responsibility of the state surveying offices. ImageStation® was specially developed for professional users in photogrammetry and cartography and offers a comprehensive set of data acquisition tools. In order to move intuitively in this stereoscopic 3D reality and to be able to measure precisely, an essential control element was integrated right from the start: the 3D stereo mouse cursor. This implementation is a basic requirement for the use of precise 3D controllers and enables optimal cooperation with the plug & play compatible 3D PluraView monitor solutions from Schneider Digital. These passive 3D monitors based on beam splitters deliver a pixel-perfect display with up to 4K per stereo channel, a high refresh rate, brilliant colors and excellent brightness and contrast values.
The fact that the powerful ImageStation® software application is fully compatible with this professional hardware and meets all the requirements of international workplace standards is confirmed by official certification from Schneider Digital – two cutting-edge technologies that work seamlessly together and represent an ideal solution for professional photogrammetry users.
Capturing and updating topographic geodata is a complex task from a scientific, technical and organizational point of view. HEXAGON’s comprehensive photogrammetry solutions support the processing of static, dynamic and multi-temporal geodata worldwide. In order to efficiently transform very large amounts of raw data into usable information, ImageStation® has been consistently further developed – based on over 40 years of photogrammetry experience, from analog stereoplotters to a fully comprehensive digital software suite including precise 3D cursor integration.
With its photogrammetry solutions, HEXAGON offers an end-to-end workflow for processing high-resolution image data and geocoded CAD and GIS content, from project start to completion. In classic aerial photogrammetry, project blocks with lateral and longitudinal overlaps of up to 90 % are captured – frame rates of 0.7 seconds are state of the art. Combined with oblique aerial photography, image data volumes of over 3 GB per pixel are generated. Project blocks with over 50,000 trigger stations and 5 cm ground resolution – for example for urban areas – generate data volumes of over 150 TB, which can now be processed without any problems.
Users of the ImageStation® Suite benefit from numerous interactive stereo functions, seamless roaming, dynamic zoom and real-time image enhancement directly in the GIS or CAD environment. The ability to perform stereo and monocompilation directly in the GIS not only creates efficiency, but also allows direct comparison with existing data sets – saving time, resources and costs.
A professional 3D stereo cursor has been implemented in ImageStation®, which enables precise navigation and three-dimensional recording of real XYZ coordinates. Numerous modules such as ISPM, ISIF, ISAT, ISST, ISFC, ISSD, ISSG, ISSV, ISDC, ISDG, ISAE as well as automated components such as ISAD, ISOP, ISDQ and ISPQ have this function and support consistent, quality-assured processing of geodata.
Surveying offices and users from the aviation, shipping and defense sectors around the world rely on the ImageStation® Suite. ISSD, for example, enables the processing of stereo images with precise 3D cursor tracking, based on aerial, satellite or UAS images – including those from Leica ADS cameras. The software dynamically adjusts brightness and contrast (MicroStation / GeoMedia) and ensures smooth stereo roaming thanks to the exclusive ImagePipe technology – essential for efficient stereo compilation.
ImageStation® Stereo for GeoMedia (ISSG) offers intelligent acquisition and editing tools in a GIS environment with freely configurable stereo and mono windows. In addition to the display of stereoscopic images, ISSG supports the acquisition, editing and validation of 3D geometries and attributes. All generated geodata can be saved openly and used across systems. The creation of digital surface models (DOM) is also part of the range of services, whereby raster and vector data are clearly displayed and edited. The integrated “Snap Cursor” ensures fast feature recognition, and contour lines can be created interactively with the “Elevation” command – including individual depth perception through vertical indexing.
The detailed, three-dimensional representation of georeferenced models is based on computationally intensive algorithms. The 3D PluraView monitors from Schneider Digital offer the perfect solution for professional 3D visualization: high resolution (up to 4K per eye), high brightness, contrast, flicker-free and two fully synchronized displays guarantee an optimal, fatigue-free display, even with dynamic content.
The cutting-edge technology of the 3D PluraView monitors, which has been tried and tested for over 14 years, is now officially certified for use with the ImageStation® Suite. This combination meets the highest requirements for ergonomics, performance and user-friendliness in a professional environment. The complete solution is complemented by high-end workstations (Intel / AMD Threadripper), professional graphics cards (NVIDIA RTX, AMD Radeon Pro) and precise 3D controllers (Stealth 3D).
HEXAGON users thus benefit from a fully integrated 3D workstation with seamless, top-level performance. Everything is perfectly coordinated – for efficient stereoscopic data processing and maximum productivity.
Josef Schneider, CEO of Schneider Digital, puts it in a nutshell:
“Hardware and software are like body and mind. Our 3D monitors not only make 3D data visible, but also usable. Thanks to the perfect symbiosis with the ImageStation® Suite, the complex processes in photogrammetric geodata acquisition can be handled intuitively, quickly and conveniently.”
