Adelaide, South Australia – 20 April 2025
http://www.thesouthaustralian.com.au is proud to announce the launch of a compelling new feature series titled “Settling South Australia” – a weekly historical deep dive into the early ships, settlers, and stories that laid the foundation for the colony of South Australia.
This series revisits the remarkable voyages of the First Fleet of South Australia, including iconic vessels such as The Rapid, The Cygnet, The Africaine, The Duke of York, and The John Pirie, among others. Each article uncovers the journey, the people on board, and the legacies they left behind – from explorers and tradesmen to women, children, and Indigenous encounters.
David Cronk, editor of The South Australian, said:
“This series is our way of reconnecting South Australians with their origin story. These aren’t just old ships – they carried real people with bold dreams who built our towns, schools, and communities. It’s about making history accessible, engaging, and deeply local.”
The project is designed to be both informative and accessible to history enthusiasts, students, educators, and proud locals. The series will include:
Passenger lists and biographical notes
Historical context around each ship’s voyage
Maps and archival imagery
Links to related sites and further reading
The first articles in the series are now live
