His thought leadership extends beyond academia; he has published articles on software planning for SD Times, an online magazine dedicated to software development topics, and maintains a personal blog.
FREMONT, CA, September 15, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Yi Zhang has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Zhang has established a distinguished career in software engineering, marked by significant contributions to the financial technology sector and large-scale technology platforms. He is currently a staff software engineer at Meta, a position he has held since 2024. In this capacity, he works on Facebook search, focusing specifically on the retrieval component of the process. His efforts directly impact billions of daily active users, underscoring the scale and influence of his work within one of the world’s largest social media platforms.
Before joining Meta, Mr. Zhang served as a staff software engineer at Unit21 from 2023 to 2024. He was also a tech lead manager at Unit21 from 2021 to 2023, having begun his tenure there as a software engineer from 2020 to 2021. During his time at Unit21, Mr. Zhang led a transformative data migration project that redefined the company’s data architecture. Over the course of a year and a half, he directed the transition from a single database system to a distributed architecture comprising five or six databases and supporting services. This initiative resulted in a thirtyfold increase in data ingestion throughput, significantly enhancing the company’s ability to process and analyze information for fraud detection and compliance purposes.
From 2018 to 2020, Mr. Zhang was a senior software engineer at TransferWise, now known as Wise, an international money transfer company headquartered in London. At Wise, he contributed to the development of trading systems, back-office solutions and international money transfer infrastructure during a period of rapid organizational growth leading up to its initial public offering.
From 2017 to 2018, Mr. Zhang held the role of lead software engineer at Kooltra, where he focused on building back-end record-keeping systems for foreign exchange brokerages. His earlier experience includes serving as a software engineer at Connected Lab from 2016 to 2017 and at Oanda Corporation from 2015 to 2016, where he worked on trading systems and provided outsourced software solutions for clients in Toronto’s dynamic technology sector.
Mr. Zhang began his professional journey as a software engineer intern at The MathWorks in 2013 while pursuing his academic studies. Throughout his career, he has primarily contributed to smaller companies and startups, with Wise being an exception due to its larger scale during his tenure.
In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Zhang has served as a judge for two externally open hackathons, further demonstrating his commitment to fostering innovation within the technology community.
Mr. Zhang’s academic background is both extensive and internationally recognized. He earned a Master of Information and Data Science in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2023. He completed coursework toward a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science at the University of Waterloo in 2015 before deciding to pursue industry opportunities that better aligned with his interests. Mr. Zhang holds an integrated master’s degree in mathematics from Imperial College London, which he graduated from in 2014. He also participated in an academic exchange program in mathematics at ETH Zürich during the 2012-2013 academic year.
His scholarly achievements have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Best Paper Award at the International Systems and Software Product Line Conference (SPLC) in 2016 and the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Automated Software Engineering (ASE) in 2015. He also received the G-Research Prize from Imperial College London in 2014 and the Ken Allen Prize from the same institution in 2011.
Mr. Zhang has contributed original research as co-author of “A Mathematical Model of Performance-Relevant Feature Interactions,” presented at SPLC in 2016, and “Performance Prediction of Configurable Software Systems by Fourier Learning,” presented at ASE in 2015. His thought leadership extends beyond academia; he has published articles on software planning for SD Times, an online magazine dedicated to software development topics, and maintains a personal blog where he shares insights on software engineering.
He attributes his success to diligent effort and broad exposure across multiple cultures and regions, including China, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, which have shaped his empathetic approach and adaptability within diverse professional environments. Mr. Zhang’s interest in technology was sparked during his undergraduate studies when he discovered fulfillment in building websites and programming projects, an experience that set him on his current path.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Mr. Zhang enjoys building websites, developing traffic simulators and exploring animation projects. He is dedicated to advancing innovative technologies that support future artificial intelligence and computing infrastructure use cases and aspires to become an industry leader within this domain.
Mr. Zhang balances his career with family life alongside his spouse, an analyst at PayPal, and their child.
