NEW YORK, February 19, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Michael Kounavis, PhD, software engineer, ML/AI with Meta Platforms, Inc., was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the Manhattan regional edition of The New Yorker.
Drawing upon nearly three decades of professional excellence, Dr. Michael Kounavis is a noted expert in software engineering, hardware engineering and modern cryptography. Since 2021, he has made contributions as a software engineer with Meta, where he has leveraged his experience in research and innovation to excel in technological advancements.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Kounavis served as a senior staff research scientist with Intel Corporation in Hillsboro, Oregon, from 2004 to 2021, where he focused his efforts on high-performance computer architecture and high-performance circuits. To wit, he is well-regarded for co-developing one of the world’s most energy-efficient Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption engines and co-inventing an instruction set called AES-NI, which has been responsible for encrypting modern internet transactions. Additionally, he is proud to have contributed to patents in human activity recognition. Before joining the staff at Intel Corporation, Dr. Kounavis was a graduate research assistant at Columbia University from 1996 to 2003.
Impressively, Dr. Kounavis has published 84 technical papers and holds 102 patents, with an additional 14 patents pending. To remain abreast of developments in his areas of interest, Dr. Kounavis maintains professional alignment with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He also served as the president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association between 2007 and 2012.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Kounavis has been honored with numerous accolades. In light of his work in accelerating AES encryption, he was honored with the Intel Achievement Award from Intel Corporation in 2008. Dr. Kounavis first attended the National Technical University of Athens in his native Greece, where he received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in 1996. He subsequently relocated to the United States and enrolled at Columbia University, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering and computer science in 2003. Dr. Kounavis’ doctoral thesis was awarded with distinction in 2004.
