Before that, he served as the Azure chief technology officer for media and entertainment at Microsoft from 2020 to 2022, contributing significantly to developing and executing product strategies for media solutions on the Azure platform. Mr. Basse’s tenure as president of decentralized media infrastructure at Live Planet Inc. from 2019 to 2020 further exemplified his leadership in innovative media solutions with emerging 5G mobile infrastructure.
From 2012 to 2019, Mr. Basse held the position of chief technology officer at 20th Century Fox Film Corp., where he was instrumental in founding the UHD Alliance in partnership with Samsung. This initiative brought together consumer electronics manufacturers, Hollywood studios and technology companies to lead the transition from high-definition television and movie distribution to 4K resolution and high dynamic range technology. Mr. Basse’s earlier career includes a significant period at DirecTV LLC from 1997 to 2012 as the senior vice president of broadcast systems engineering, where he led the groundbreaking transition from standard definition to high-definition television.
Mr. Basse’s career began as a scientist and engineer at Institut für Rundfunktechnik in Munich, Germany, from 1991 to 1994, followed by a role as a systems engineer at ProSieben Media AG until 1997. His academic foundation is rooted in a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Engineering School of Communications of the Air Defense Forces in Kyiv, which has been instrumental in his technical achievements throughout his career.
In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Basse has been actively involved with several industry-related organizations. He has been a member-at-large of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2018 and a member (since 1999) and fellow (since 2014) of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He also served as chairman of the board for the UHD Alliance from 2015 to 2019 and was a board member of the North American Broadcasters Association from 2008 to 2012.
Mr. Basse’s contributions have been recognized with two Technology Emmy Awards alongside his team at DirecTV, LLC in 2009 and 2014.
