He concluded his professional work, recently retiring in 2024 after an impactful tenure as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York (SUNY), Ulster, where he spent over a decade on campus. In this role, Dr. Thomason inspired students by sharing real-world examples from his extensive experience at the IBM Kingston Laboratory, emphasizing the region’s technical contributions and encouraging students to pursue creative and fulfilling careers in technology. Before his academic service at SUNY, Dr. Thomason served as a consultant for JaveaSys from 2007 to 2013, providing expert guidance on distributed computing technologies and system architecture. His consulting work was built upon a remarkable four-decade career at IBM, where he held the position of senior technical staff member between 1966 and 2007. At IBM, Dr. Thomason played a pivotal role in advancing computer display technology, notably contributing to the software for the IBM 2250 display terminal in 1966, which was the first successful commercial computer display terminal and a foundational milestone in the field of graphics computing.
Throughout his tenure at IBM, Dr. Thomason managed and chaired numerous task forces focused on implementing networking software and distributed computing technology. He was instrumental in developing the VM/ESA operating system and overseeing its networking components, which laid the groundwork for modern internet technologies. In the 1980s, Dr. Thomason contributed to the design of Distributed Processing Performance (DPPX), an innovative operating system that enabled communication between computers, which was a significant advancement at the time. As chair of a key IBM task force, he helped customers understand IBM’s software offerings and later traveled throughout Europe lecturing on these technologies.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Thomason held academic appointments as an instructor at Oklahoma State University from 1960 to 1966. He also served as an associate professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1972 to 1973 and as an adjunct associate professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute between 1976 and 1978.
Dr. Thomason’s education culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering in 1966. During his studies, he co-directed the Engineering and Computing Center, gaining hands-on experience with early computing machines. Dr. Thomason’s commitment to lifelong learning is further demonstrated by his completion of the Google AI Essentials certification through Google. This credential reflects his ongoing interest in artificial intelligence and its applications in education and industry.
Beyond his education, Dr. Thomason’s expertise is recognized through his long-standing membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery, reflecting his commitment to professional development and industry engagement. Early in his career, he also contributed to scholarly literature, authoring influential works in the IBM Systems Journal and other professional publications.
