Prior to her current role, Dr. Malyn-Smith served as the program director for occupational instructional design at Boston Public Schools for 13 years. During this time, she honed her skills in curriculum development and instructional design. Her contributions to education have been acknowledged through various accolades, including the Congressional Award for technology to empower communities presented by Congressman Major Owens.
Dr. Malyn-Smith’s most notable accomplishments include spearheading the Science Plus C project, which successfully integrated computer modeling technology skills into the Massachusetts’ state education system, helping countless students achieve academic success. Additionally, she was sought out by Google to define the work of AI-enhanced software developers, a testament to her expertise in the field. Additionally, her organization of the Power Uses of Technology project, an international conference supported by the United Nations, further underscores her commitment to fostering global collaboration and providing valuable experiences for students.
Academically, Dr. Malyn-Smith’s background includes an EdD in career development and bilingual education from Boston University obtained in 1980, an MEd in bilingual bicultural education from Boston State Teacher’s College in 1974 and a BS in English education from Universidad Interamericana in Puerto Rico in 1971. Beyond her education, she attributes her success to her insatiable curiosity and ability to connect ideas and people. She values listening and understanding others and is known for taking calculated risks on initiatives she believes in.
Dr. Malyn-Smith has further contributed to numerous projects and publications, including serving as a keynote speaker on integrating artificial intelligence literacy into community college programs and leading projects like STELAR and judging for the Real World Design Challenge. Beyond her professional endeavors, she is actively involved in civic organizations, such as Data Elevates and CareerFirst.ai advisory committees. She also supports efforts to aid the homeless population.
In her personal life, Dr. Malyn-Smith enjoys reading mysteries, watching British mystery series on television and spending time with family, including her sons and granddaughter. In the upcoming years, she plans to gradually reduce her full-time work commitments while continuing to mentor the next generation of leaders within her organization. She also aims to continue her focus on emerging technologies and hopes to join influential boards and participate in speaking engagements to share her wealth of knowledge on future work with broader audiences.
