Where conventional surveying reaches its limits today, the 3D photogrammetry application Agisoft Metashape Pro is used, often in combination with so-called “drones” or “Unmanned Aerial Systems” (UAS). As part of the analysis and processing of geodata, Metashape Pro generates detailed, fully textured 3D models with maximum accuracy and detail from digital images. Metashape Pro is not only the ideal tool for processing UAS images, but also for large-format aerial images and terrestrial close-ups. As a global specialist for stereoscopic 3D hardware and visualization solutions, Schneider Digital has been working closely with the software company Agisoft for many years. Agisoft is a pioneer in the development of UAS and terrestrial photogrammetry solutions. Since 2017, the company has increasingly focused its development efforts on implementing stereoscopic visualization and editing functions to create detailed, fully textured 3D models from digital images. These 3D stereo visualization and editing functions are particularly important for UAS service providers for the digitization of objects and the creation and editing of dense 3D point clouds and textured building models. Since the release 1.6.3 in June 2020, Agisoft has supported the stereoscopic editing functions of the Stealth 3D Mouse S4-Z in Metashape Pro, which now enables particularly precise and efficient work in (holographic) space.
While the standard version of the Metashape software is sufficient for basic, non-geodetic requirements and smaller projects, the Pro version is very well suited for georeferencing large 3D GIS data sets and digitizing them in the software – also in 3D stereo. Up to 50,000 images of a physical object or geographical area can be integrated and analyzed in a coherent image block with the Pro version. The complex, rigid 3D model adjustment enables the tens of thousands of Metashape Pro users worldwide to solve any type of 3D reconstruction, visualization, surveying and mapping task efficiently and with maximum precision.
Due to its achievable accuracy, the software is used for UAS and aerial triangulation as well as for the processing of satellite images. Metashape Pro is also used in the creation of elevation models and in terrestrial laser scanning, where objects are directly mapped and reconstructed using dense and highly accurate 3D point clouds with 3D point coordinates. Metashape Pro is based on computationally intensive and accurate reconstruction algorithms for the three-dimensional calculation and visualization of geo-referenced objects, which were originally captured as autocorrelated surface models in the form of dense point clouds using professional sensor technology.
The future of geodata is 3D stereo visualization
Metashape Pro is certainly one of the photogrammetry software applications currently available with the widest range of functions. But only with powerful hardware components can the dimensioning, visualization and analysis of 3D data be carried out efficiently and realistically. The main elements of the functional scope are 3D stereo display, 3D object capture and the connection to very large GIS databases. With the 3D PluraView monitors and their dual screens, Schneider Digital provides the optimal desktop solution for stereoscopic visualization and data editing. With display diagonals of up to 28″ and up to 4K resolution per screen, the passive beamsplitter technology enables a daylight-compatible and unrivaled high-contrast stereoscopic display of high-resolution GIS and BIM models.
Agisoft Metashape Pro processes very large amounts of data reliably and precisely and has therefore become an indispensable part of many users’ geodata workflows. Today, UAS systems can capture image series with several thousand images and resolutions of 1 cm and less. In the terrestrial “close-range” area, even less than 1mm pixel size is possible. With Metashape Pro and the correctly configured hardware for processing, data sets of several terabytes can be calculated without any problems. The ability to process large data sets with the highest resolutions is routinely used in the digital reconstruction of buildings and terrain models, but also especially in archaeology for the recording and reconstruction of cultural assets.
With Metashape Pro, 3D models can also be recorded and processed multiple times and displayed as a 4D time series. Thanks to its ability to realistically display combined geodata and building models with a high level of detail, Metashape Pro is also the ideal software for surveyors and architects. The main functions of the software solutions are

For 16 years now, the passive “beamsplitter” monitor technology of the 3D PluraView monitors has been the reference with the highest user satisfaction and user acceptance of all stereoscopic display systems, especially in the geoinformation industry. As the advanced successor to PLANAR’s beamsplitter monitors, very large amounts of data can be spatially visualized in the highest resolution with up to 4K/UHD per stereo channel.
