A new UK-built app called Hey Quitter is tackling the youth vaping crisis with a mix of science and gamified motivation that makes quitting both engaging and achievable. The app leads users through a 30-day journey combining mindset training, self-hypnosis, and progress tracking, turning each milestone into a tangible reward such as discounts and vouchers from partnered brands. After the first month, users continue to earn rewards and encouragement for staying vape-free, helping them maintain progress long after they quit.
“When I tried to quit vaping, none of the existing apps gave me what I needed,” says Kate Krekis, founder of Hey Quitter. “They were either designed for smokers or so outdated they didn’t reflect what it’s actually like to quit today. What ended up working for me was a mix of hypnosis, accountability, and rewards – so I bundled all of that into one place to make quitting easier, and accessible, for everyone.”
Self-hypnosis, a technique backed by several clinical studies showing higher quit success rates compared to willpower alone, is at the heart of Hey Quitter’s approach. It helps reprogram the subconscious beliefs that drive cravings and anxiety, rather than simply suppressing them. Alongside that, the app delivers short, practical lessons that help users understand nicotine addiction and retrain their mindset – an approach similar to the cognitive reframing used in leading quit-smoking programmes.
“Youth vaping is becoming an epidemic,” says Krekis. “We’re seeing a generation of never-smokers picking up brightly coloured, fruit-flavoured vapes – and they don’t realise how addictive they are until they’re hooked. More and more, we’re seeing vaping linked to serious health problems. There’s even an official diagnosis code now for vaping-related lung injury. That tells you everything you need to know.”
Since launch, Hey Quitter has already attracted hundreds of downloads and enthusiastic feedback from users who say it makes quitting feel achievable, rewarding, and even enjoyable. Users earn points for staying vape-free, completing daily lessons, and building streaks, which can be redeemed for discounts and partner rewards – turning what’s often a stressful process into a motivating, positive experience.
The app’s combination of psychology, education, and rewards is designed to help users break free from vaping for good. With a focus on progress rather than perfection, Hey Quitter aims to shift how quitting is seen – not as a battle, but as a process of empowerment.
