In 2006, he joined CarGurus as a senior architect, eventually becoming the director of new products until 2018. His most notable achievement at CarGurus was helping grow the company from a team of three to over 1,000 employees before it went public.
Mr. Kaplansky’s journey is a testament to resilience and transformation, both personally and professionally. Born in Ukraine, his early life was shaped by a rich family history marked by survival and perseverance. His grandmother endured the horrors of a concentration camp in Nazi Germany, while his grandfather fought for the Russians during World War II. The family reconnected with their American relatives in 1992, who then sponsored Mr. Kaplansky’s move to the United States on a student visa. This pivotal moment allowed him to pursue higher education and eventually bring his family to the U.S. as refugees.
Mr. Kaplansky’s academic pursuits led him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Engineering in computer science in 2001. Prior to this, he completed a degree in music performance and teaching at Musical College in Ukraine in 1992. These educational achievements laid the foundation for his career in technology and entrepreneurship. His time at MIT was instrumental in developing the skills that would later contribute to his success at CarGurus.
Mr. Kaplansky is also actively involved in civic organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and makes various charitable contributions. His commitment to community service reflects his belief in uplifting others and fostering personal growth through shared knowledge and experiences.
