3D PluraView from Schneider Digital: stereoscopic displays galvanized to NATO standard (© Schneider Digital)
Today’s armed forces around the world use digital 3D stereoscopic monitors for image analysis. The analysis of stereoscopic images is considered a key technology, as it provides significantly more interpretable content compared to viewing individual, two-dimensional images from the same source and with identical resolution. In the military sector, modern dual-screen systems based on passive stereo displays are used in geo-information applications – particularly in the fields of photogrammetry, GIS/mapping, remote sensing, explosive ordnance disposal, operational planning and airspace surveillance. The German company Schneider Digital is one of the few suppliers worldwide to provide future-proof stereoscopic monitor solutions and large-format projection technologies, including high-performance workstations and servers. All workstation components – including workstations, 3D stereo visualization systems for desktop and large format – can be electromagnetically shielded or galvanized in accordance with the NATO SDIP-27 standard (Level A, B, C).
With up to 4K resolution per dual screen, the 3D PluraView monitors are directly compatible with most stereo-capable software applications available on the market, without the need for special graphics drivers or emitters for stereo signals. Stereoscopic content is viewed on the 3D PluraView through extremely lightweight, passively polarized glasses.
The left image channel is displayed on the vertical monitor, the right channel is electronically mirrored on the upper monitor and viewed through a so-called “beam splitter” mirror, creating a holographic object impression in 3D space.
The additive combination of the two screens results in a very bright stereoscopic visualization which, in contrast to active LCD shutter glasses, enables permanent use in normal office or laboratory environments without darkening the workplace. The two screens also enable the full monitor resolution of up to 4K (UHD) to be achieved for each stereo channel and therefore each eye. In addition, the passive stereo principle is completely flicker-free, as the left and right images are displayed separately on one monitor each, which makes it possible to work comfortably with stereoscopic content at all times.
Stereoscopic displays for military applications
The 3D PluraView stereoscopic monitors are designed by Schneider Digital in an extremely stable construction and manufactured using CNC precision components made of steel or aluminum. This design enables precise and long-term stable calibration and co-registration of the two screens, resulting in optimum stereo image quality, which is particularly important for military applications:
– Two different system sizes with four options for screen diagonals: 22″/ 24″ and 27″/ 28″ – for optimum adaptation to the workplace and application;
– Highest resolution from Full HD to 2.5K (WQHD) up to 4K /10 bit (UHD) per eye for razor-sharp, bright and high-contrast images;
– Absolutely flicker-free for relaxed, fatigue-free work in 3D stereo with extremely lightweight but robust polarization glasses;
– Suitable for daylight, no 120Hz dark phase, maximum brightness and full resolution as a separate monitor is available for each stereo channel or each eye;
– Very wide, 170 degree viewing angle – flexible evaluations or meetings with several people at the same time;
– Perfectly suited for direct connection of laptops – “Plug & Play” without complex cabling – ideal for mobile use, even in the field;
– Certified for use with BAE Systems (Socet GPX), Thales (GeoMaker), Collins (SCi-X) and Esri (ArcGIS Pro);
– Functional design with optimized footprint;
– Highest quality – Engineered & Made in Germany;
– Certified zoning available according to NATO SDIP-27 standard (Level A, B, and C)
The electronic components used already have very low electromagnetic emissions without additional measures and have been certified by the German BSI, the Federal Institute for Information Security, the Swiss Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) and the National Geospatial Agency (NGA) in the USA. In combination with powerful workstations from Schneider Digital, the stereoscopic 3D PluraView monitors offer maximum security, performance and stability in military environments. The available complete workstation solutions (monitor + workstation + input devices) can be fully shielded and galvanized according to NATO SDIP-27 standard. The initial shielding of the 3D PluraView monitors in accordance with SDIP-27 (Level C) is already possible with little effort and at an additional cost.
While there is certainly no single “ideal” stereoscopic or holographic 3D display that meets all requirements, purposes and wishes, passive stereo display technology with two individual screens has been available on the market for 16 years and is absolutely mature. Schneider-Digital has established itself as the de facto standard in the military sector with its 3D PluraView monitor series and is by far the market leader for military 3D stereo desktop displays.
Together with the 3D PluraView monitor systems, software packages such as Socet GXP, GeoMaker and Sci-X can realize their full potential for military users in terms of stereoscopic display, data acquisition and processing. This perfect interplay of hardware and software also applies to the new generation of mesh-based, realistic 3D modeling applications, e.g. nFrames SURE.
With ArcGIS Pro, the US company Esri, the world market leader for geographic information systems, has created a universal stereoscopic software platform. If 3D display hardware is connected, ArcGIS Pro automatically displays stereoscopic images or video sources from satellites, airplanes or drones, along with all other 3D content such as LIDAR, CAD and mesh datasets. This application is an excellent example of a comprehensive and intuitive integration of 3D datasets from multiple sources into a unified stereoscopic data environment on Schneider Digital’s 3D PluraView monitors.
