Companies are showing increasing interest in tapping into optimization potential in production planning and control based on their production data. However, the economically viable use of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) requires that all relevant information is available and that its structure is suitable for the respective applications. The COSCOM ECO system, supported by numerous experts, forms the basis of a platform economy for the use of business intelligence (BI).
“Hey Alexa, how can you improve industrial production?” – This question is difficult to answer in general, but it can be answered for specific use cases. Why shouldn’t work preparation receive automated answers such as: “Is there an approved NC program for this article? Are all the required tools available? What measurement data is available?” This involves specific knowledge in the context of production planning, which would involve a great deal of effort without IT support. This is precisely where the platform economy concept comes in, in which various experts coordinate their contributions.
Digital ecosystems are based on the model of nature – particularly with regard to competition and diverse forms of cooperation. A digital ecosystem is a distributed, adaptable, open socio-technical system that exhibits characteristics such as self-organization, scalability and sustainability. The COSCOM ECO system for the machining industry consistently pursues this idea: all production-relevant data is brought together in a central knowledge base – the “single source of truth” – and is available to all data users in the company and on the store floor thanks to end-to-end digitalization.
Central data hub for machine learning and business intelligence
COSCOM is aware of the opportunities offered by machine learning and BI. “Machine learning can be used to derive insights from past data sets and optimize future processes. In future, a master computer could plan orders independently and coordinate the necessary resources intelligently,” says Christian Erlinger, Managing Director of COSCOM Computer GmbH in Ebersberg near Munich.
In addition, the centrally stored production information can be used to tackle overarching efficiency issues – for example, when evaluating a new machining center including all the required operating resources. This makes it possible to analyze the added value offered by technologies such as trochoidal milling, which works with a high depth of cut – including suitable machining strategies. COSCOM experts have already successfully implemented corresponding BI projects.
New paths – risk-free and data-based
“The use of a new machine was analyzed as part of a BI project to increase efficiency,” explains Christian Erlinger. “This showed that the potential of trochoidal milling remained untapped, as only the existing CAM program was slightly adapted for the follow-up order. The basic machining strategy was not questioned.” In other words, instead of re-planning, the company reverted to tried-and-tested programs – leaving existing optimization potential unused. BI analyses clearly showed which milling processes were used how often – and where unused opportunities lay.
A similar analysis revealed how many tools should be stocked and in what quantities. Numerous aspects are taken into account here – such as the delivery time: even with rarely used tools, a larger stock can make sense if there are long procurement times. A BI application based on the COSCOM data platform reveals such correlations and thus facilitates well-founded decisions on complex issues.
Platform economy: making big data usable
For data-intensive projects (keyword “big data”), the COSCOM experts rely on MS PowerBI, among others, with the COSCOM data platform providing the appropriate data structure. Of course, other BI systems can also be integrated. “With the COSCOM ECO system, production data becomes a valuable resource – including its relationships and correlations,” says Erlinger.
COSCOM actively supports the implementation of AI and BI applications – with the aim of enabling users to actively use their data. After all, it’s not just about collecting information – it’s about linking it intelligently, evaluating it and using it for the continuous improvement process (CIP) to identify new efficiency potential on the store floor.
