With a professional journey spanning more than four decades, Mr. Johas Teener has established a remarkable career across the fields of engineering, connectivity architecture and information technology. Since 2016, he has been self-employed as a network and connectivity architect, through which he continues to innovate and contribute to the industry. Concurrently, he has held the position of plumbing architect and senior technical director at Plumblinks since 2002, demonstrating his long-term commitment to advancing technology. From 2005 to 2016, he also served as a senior technical director and plumbing architect at Broadcom Inc., where he played a pivotal role in developing cutting-edge solutions.
Prior to his tenure at Broadcom, Mr. Johas Teener was a consultant for Oxford Semiconductor from 2004 to 2005. His earlier career includes significant contributions as a plumbing architect at Apple from 2002 to 2004 and from 1988 to 1997. During his time at Apple, he utilized the company’s “15 percent personal project time” policy to develop FireWire, an interconnecting technology that revolutionized high-speed data transfer for audio and video applications. His innovation earned widespread recognition as Byte Magazine’s “Most Significant New Technology” at COMDEX and received both Emmy and Grammy technology awards.
Mr. Johas Teener’s leadership extends beyond engineering roles, as evidenced by his position as chief technology officer at Zayante from 1997 to 2002 and chair and editor of the IEEE 1394 standards working group (which standardized Firewire for all to use). Earlier on, he worked in system architect positions at CXC, Anderson Jacobson, and Calcomp, where he had major roles in the design of the hardware and software of two early distributed digital PBX systems. Among other things. he was among the first to utilize the 8086 microprocessor for applications beyond traditional computing, used Ethernet in a distributed realtime control system, and designed a ring network that eventually became the technology used in FDDI-2. His career began in 1971 at Technology Service Corporation, a small research and development firm where he worked as a research scientist, programming simulations and developing hardware and software for advanced radar technologies.
In addition to his vocational achievements, Mr. Johas Teener has been actively involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He chaired the Time-Sensitive Networking task group within IEEE 802.1 from 2012 to 2016 — bringing in many previously excluded individuals from the automotive and industrial control sectors to ensure their contributions were acknowledged — and the Audio Video Bridging task group from 2005 to 2012. His pioneering work has been recognized with many patents, including those for real-time interconnect systems, Ethernet applications and network synchronization signal methods.
Mr. Johas Teener’s academic background laid a strong foundation for his successful career. He earned a Master of Science in engineering systems from UCLA in 1976 after obtaining a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1971. His education provided him with much of the technical expertise necessary for his groundbreaking work in real-time device interconnection and network architecture.
Extending his knowledge into the realm of education, Mr. Johas Teener served as a tutor for the Cupertino Union School District from 1990 to 1991. He has been recognized with several accolades over the years, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the IEEE Standards Association in 2016 and the IEEE Standards Medallion in 2009. As a contributor to professional journals, he continues to share his insights and expertise with his peers in the industry.
In the coming years, Mr. Johas Teener intends to contribute to the harm reduction movement, a cause that is deeply importance to him.
