What do you love? Do your life and character mirror that love?
On Valentine’s Day many people will set aside time, money, and energy to show their affection to someone in their life. It’s a wonderful tradition, and we should tell and show the important people in our lives that we love them.
In the Greek language there are at least eight words that are translated as love. Each of them denotes a specific type of love. On Valentine’s most people are celebrating eros-a -romantic love, with some using the day to promote philia-a friendship type of love. But have you ever considered celebrating Valentine’s in light of God’s love?
The Greek word for God’s love toward humanity is agape, and it is characterized as a universal, selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional love. If you read the Bible and follow the story arch from Genesis to Revelation, you will see this type of love played out across the pages. The whole Bible points to God’s agape love for His people. We have done nothing to earn God’s love. It is a gift He has freely given; we need only accept it.
When we accept God and let His love fill our lives, that love for Him will begin to manifest in every part of us and our lives. As it does, we should start to exhibit the characteristics of love.
Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians that “love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (NIV). Paul also says that we can do many great things but if we don’t have love, we gain nothing.
The greatest love is agape, and it has the power to change everything. Is it changing you? Are you becoming more like Him every day?
This Valentine’s rekindle your relationship with the One who created and perfected the greatest love of all. Pray this prayer with me and feel the renewal of agape love this Valentine’s Day — Dear Lord, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, NIV).
